Today, Wednesday, October 15th, we launched our own language program at Kibeo: Taalrijk (Language Rich). With this program, we want to give children equal opportunities in their language development from an early age, by not only learning language, but especially experiencing it. A special guest was children's author Loes Riphagen, known for Coco can do it!

The greatest journey ever

The festive kickoff took place at Kibeo 't Saamdeel in Kapelle, where toddlers, educational professionals, and guests enjoyed a special morning full of language fun. Loes Riphagen read from her latest book The greatest journey everWith a large stuffed worm, papier-mâché stones, and fake insects, she brought the story to life. The children listened attentively, joined in the conversation, enthusiastically answered her questions, and sometimes even completed her sentences. Loes smiled: "I thought it was so lovely when the children all shouted 'EVER!' when I said: The greatest journey... That they're so involved, that's exactly what makes language so much fun."

Discover language richness

Before the reading began, the children walked through an arch to literally enter Taalrijk. They looked around curiously. And some walked back, just to go through that special entrance again. Inside, there was plenty to discover: a storytelling and discovery area, a cozy quiet house, a book tree full of stories, and all sorts of materials that encouraged conversation, listening, and imagination. Like the story stones, which invited children to create and tell stories together.

With Taalrijk, we ensure that children not only learn language but also experience it. Because the more enjoyment and confidence children experience in language, the greater the chance they have of developing skills that last a lifetime.

Why is this important?

Research shows that a strong language foundation at a young age is crucial for a child's further development, both cognitively and socially. At the same time, we recognize that not every child grows up with the same rich language skills, and that language delays often arise before the age of five. There's still much to be gained, especially in childcare. That's why we developed our own language program: Taalrijk (Language Rich). Taalrijk is tailored to childcare practices, scientifically substantiated, and primarily focused on experiencing language rather than simply learning it. The fact that we, as an organization, are developing our own language method underscores our ambition to give every child the best possible language opportunities.
