This week the tables are turned at Kibeo, because it's Kids are the Boss week! The children's council of BSO Kibeo de Riederhof in Barendrecht came together well in advance for an important meeting. After coming up with different themes, they visited the other children to find out which themes were the most popular. The result was a unanimous decision: a swinging disco, games and games, sports and pranks.

During a swinging disco in the sports hall, the BSO children showed each other and the pedagogical professionals their coolest dance moves. Later in the week it was time for a games and games afternoon where the children could choose what they were going to play. For slightly older children there was even the option to play games on the Nintendo Switch. There was also a sports day on the program this week. The children played and ran around after school and chose which sports they would practice. This super fun week ends on Friday with a fun afternoon. Time to make fun of the pedagogical professionals!

Children, parents and pedagogical professionals are extremely enthusiastic

Reactions such as: “This week is really cool, because we get to choose what we do,” and “Children are the boss week is fun! When can we be in charge again?” the pedagogical professionals were buzzing. 1TP172Some children had even asked their parents to pick them up from after-school care later this week, so that they could enjoy it for as long as possible. The parents and pedagogical professionals were also very enthusiastic. For example, one of the mothers said that she likes that the children also get a voice in this way. And from now on, the pedagogical professionals will hold disco afternoons more often. Because they also sung along enthusiastically!

Children's participation is important for children's development

Every year, November 20 is International Day of the Rights of the Child. On this day it is celebrated that every child has their own rights. Kibeo therefore organizes the 'Children are the Boss week' every year in the same week. During and in preparation for the Children are the Boss week, the pedagogical professionals encourage children's participation at the BSO. This is not only fun for the children, but also very important for their development.

Children's participation teaches them a lot. This way, children learn to form an opinion and realize that their opinion matters. They learn to stand up for themselves and become more involved in after-school care activities. In addition, children gain more self-confidence, independence and responsibility if they are allowed to make their own decisions. These are all skills that will help them grow up into healthy, social and responsible young adults who make a positive contribution to society.
